Emma's Birthday

Today is Emma's 4th birthday. I was blessed to take her on a mini mommy and me vacation. We went to Anderson Island last night to spend some time with Aunt Janelle and Aunt Laura. After a fun evening playing with the kitty's and doggy we settled in for the night. Early this morning we were joined by Grandma and Grandpa Myers, Grandma and Grandpa Tomasch, Aunt Desiree and Uncle Raymond. We were thrilled to attend church with everyone and watch as Uncle Raymond was ordained as a minister. Great Job Uncle Raymond!

After returning home we went out for Emma's annual birthday desert. she decided that she wanted to go to Baskin and Robbins for ice cream. It was a chilly choice for January, but still a ton of fun!

I love spending time on each birthday thinking about the moment each child has entered our lives. Today was spent thinking about January 18, 2005. I was 39.6 days pregnant and couldn't wait to find out if we were having a boy or girl! Tomorrow was our due date but I knew that today was the day we were going to meet our little baby. We woke up, showered, gathered our bags and waited for Grandma Myers to arrive at our house. Today we were scheduled for an induction. I was contracting throughout the night and when we arrived at the hospital I was dilated to a 3+. As our nurse started the pit she asked when I thought I would be delivered. She laughed at my answer...I want this baby out by noon!

Several hours went by and I was having regular non-painful contractions. Dr Shope came in at about 11:00 am to check me. He did an exam and my heart sunk when he told me that I was still a 3...maybe 4. He said that it looked like it might take a while for this baby to make his/her arrival. He ruptured my membranes and went back to the office. Within a couple of minutes I had my first contraction. It hurt really, really bad! I rested in bed, went to the bathroom, and sat up in the chair for a while. The next time the nurse came into our room I told her that my pain level had increased.

She asked me how bad my pain was, and I told her that it was a least a 6. She looked at me for a few seconds then told me that I looked like my pain was at a 3. Knowing that I had hours to go I requested an epidural.

The anaesthesiologist was wonderful. He did a great job and our epidural was done shortly after noon. I expected instant relief but the pressure only progressed. I told our nurse that I was still having the pressure and she stopped in her tracks. It had only been about 1 hour since I was checked at a 3 but she did a quick exam. She looked up with fear in her eyes. I was complete and baby was coming...

"Don't push...Don't push...Don't push...we need to get a doctor here!!!" she continued to say while she frantically called Dr Shope and got our room ready. I was so thankful that I had that epidural. I sat there enjoying the scene filled with joy just waiting for our doctor to arrive.

About one and a half pushes later Emma was born and placed on my tummy at 12:58pm. Kevin kept saying "It's a girl!" over and over. She was beautiful was a head full of black hair. If I didn't have the epidural I just know that I would made my noon goal! Emma Lynn Currey weighted 7 pounds 15 ounces and was perfect in every way.
